About Us
Head of Nerdy Operations
In the land down under, where the vehicles are as rugged as the outback and just as likely to cross a crocodile-infested river as a crowded Woolies car park, we talk a lot about GVM and GCM. Why? Because without them, you wouldn’t know if your ute could legally carry that kangaroo you just rescued, along with your mate’s oversized BBQ.
Sort of. Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) is the maximum your vehicle can weigh when fully loaded. That's everything: your camping gear, the emergency stash of Tim Tams, your collection of AC/DC vinyl records, and yes, even your mother-in-law in the backseat.
It’s the figure that says, “Alright mate, this is where you pump the brakes on the cargo.” Go over this number, and you might as well be driving a mobile black hole - because that’s illegal.
Not exactly. Gross Combination Mass (GCM) is the total allowable weight of your vehicle plus whatever you’re towing. That caravan, boat, or trailer loaded with enough beer for a cricket team? Yeah, all of that counts. Think of GCM as the relationship status between your ute and trailer. It’s complicated, but as long as the total weight doesn’t swipe left on legality, you’re good to go.
Because one day, you might trade that hatchback for a hefty hauler and decide to tow something heavier than a grudge. Australia’s no slouch when it comes to regulations, and these weights are more than just suggestions—they’re the law. Like Vegemite, they’re an acquired taste but essential to the Aussie way of life.
If you load your ute like you’re trying to fit in every beach from the Sunshine Coast down to Bondi, you need to know your GVM and GCM. They’re the difference between a smooth ride and a date with the authorities, where the only numbers you’ll crunch are the ones on your fine.
Remember, when it comes to GVM and GCM, treat your vehicle like you would a koala - with care and a strict no-overload policy. Stay legal, stay safe, and for goodness sake, save room for the esky!
